What can you do at the library?

Consult documents

Most of the library’s documents are open access and can be consulted in the adjoining study room (Chemin Cappuccini headquarters). For theses, audiovisual materials, and documents from certain special collections, please contact the staff, who will retrieve the requested material. Dictionaries, encyclopedias, theses, and documents published more than 60 years ago can only be consulted at the library, while other documents can generally be borrowed.

Books for exam preparation and certain language dictionaries can be consulted at the library desk on Rue Monte Vodice.

Borrow documents

The number of documents that can be borrowed and the loan period depend on the type of user (students and administrative staff, students preparing their thesis, professors, collaborators in teaching and research activities) and the type of document (books subject to exams, other volumes, periodicals, audiovisual materials). To use the lending service, you must register with the library by filling out the online form.

Access online resources

A computer is available in the periodicals room of the library at the Chemin Cappuccini headquarters, but you can also access the subscription databases online, from any university PC or your own computer, by connecting to UniVdA’s Wi-Fi system.

To consult these resources remotely, simply follow the instructions available on this page and enter your University login credentials.

Ask for help with your research

The library staff are available to help you find the material you need. For more complex research, it is possible to make an appointment.

Request documents from other libraries

You can request books and copies of articles that are not held by the university library from other libraries, using the Inter-library Loan and Document Delivery services.

This service is subject to a fee: the amount varies depending on the type of document and its origin (Italian or foreign library). Requests can be made by filling out the online forms available on the page specifically dedicated to this on the university’s website.

Who can use the university library’s services?

Everyone can consult the online catalog to find out about the university library’s holdings.

Students, professors, administrative staff, and collaborators in teaching and research activities at the University of Aosta Valley and other partner universities can register with the library and use all of its services, by presenting their university card or an identity document.

External researchers can consult library documents on site by filling out a request for access to consultation.

Resources

In order to support teaching and research activities, the Library preserves, organizes, and makes available scientific content in various formats and media: books, journals, online databases, audiovisual materials, dictionaries and encyclopedias, e-books and newspaper articles, as well as music, videos, language courses… (registration for library services is required to access some of these resources).

Databases and other online resources

The library selects a number of online resources, organized by subject and freely accessible. We are also subscribed to a number of online bibliographic databases, which are only accessible from the university’s internal network; they can also be consulted remotely by entering your University login credentials, following the instructions available on this page.

Audiovisual materials and DVDs

At the Chemin Cappuccini library headquarters, you will also find CDs and CD-ROMs, mainly related to language courses, with audio materials and exercises, as well as film DVDs, with audio and subtitles in several languages.

Periodicals

The library subscribes to numerous periodicals dedicated to the disciplines taught at UniVdA; the various issues can be borrowed for one week, except for the most recent one. Some journals are also accessible online, or only online: this can be checked by consulting the catalog. The periodicals are kept at the Chemin Cappuccini library headquarters.

Theses

All theses defended at the University up to 2019 are deposited in paper format at the Chemin Cappuccini library headquarters. If the author has given consent, they can be consulted at the library. Theses deposited from 2020 onwards, which are only available in digital format, can be consulted online via the UniVdArTe portal.

Print monographs

Mainly open access, arranged according to the Dewey Decimal Classification, at the Chemin Cappuccini library headquarters. They include volumes covering the disciplines taught at the University of Aosta Valley, as well as reference works such as dictionaries and encyclopedias. Books for exam preparation and certain language dictionaries can be found at the library desk on Rue Monte Vodice.

ReteIndaco

Numerous free digital resources are also accessible via the ReteINDACO platform: e-books and newspaper articles, as well as music, videos, language courses… (registration for library services is required to access some of these resources).

Several e-books included in exam syllabi can also be borrowed for two weeks: these texts are accessible directly from the online catalog, by searching by title and/or author.

Catalogue

The library catalog is accessible online. It allows you to obtain information about the library’s documents (books, periodicals, CDs and DVDs, theses, e-books, and other digital documents from ReteINDACO).

Beyond bibliographic information and document location, the catalog also provides information on the status of individual copies: it is possible to find out whether a document is on loan and its expected return date, whether there are already reservations, and whether a document can be borrowed or must be consulted on site. Users registered for the lending services can also make reservations, request documents and extensions, and check their status by entering their login credentials. Access the library’s online catalog.

Regulations on access to library services

To find out the detailed rules for using the university library’s services, it is advisable to consult the regulations on access to library services, which are understood to be accepted in full at the time of registration.

Inter-library loan and document delivery for other libraries

The university library guarantees inter-library loan and document delivery services. This service operates on a basis of reciprocal free exchange. If the requesting library does not offer this exchange arrangement, reimbursement of costs is required at the following rates:

– ½ IFLA coupon for individual document delivery;

– 1 IFLA coupon for monograph loans.

Other payment methods, such as payment via PagoPA slip, postal account, or bank account, must be agreed upon in advance with the University Library.

Requests can be made directly online, using the forms specifically provided for this purpose, available at the bottom of the page, or sent by email to biblioteca@univda.it.

Each request can cover a maximum of 3 books for inter-library loan and 5 periodicals or other documents for the document delivery service; each library may in no case exceed the maximum limit of 10 documents requested per month.

Excluded from inter-library loan are reference works, including dictionaries, particularly valuable works, works published more than 60 years ago, theses, periodicals, and documents classified as “EXAMS.”

Loans are granted for a period of 30 days, renewable for an additional 15 days upon explicit request submitted before the due date and provided there are no reservations for the document. The library reserves the right to establish any restrictions on home loans due to the particular nature of the requested documents. The receiving library is responsible for the correct use and timely return of the documents.

The library is present on ACNP (Italian periodicals catalog), NILDE (platform for secure document exchange), and ILL-SBN (platform for transmitting document requests). Monographs can be searched via the online catalog.
